The town celebrated the contributions of Italian Americans and Italian American heritage for the second year in a row on Sunday. The Westfield Italian American Club and the Greater Westfield Chapter of UNICO National sponsored the town’s second annual Columbus Day Ceremony in the south side parking lot of the Westfield train station.
The Rev. Michael Saporito, of the Parish Community of St. Helen, in Westfield, was honored as the event’s grand marshal. Ralph Contini, the National Columbus Day Chair, told the crowd that Christopher Columbus was “much maligned.” Modern historians are unjustly blaming Columbus for the world's evils, Contini said.
