Montgomery County State Senator Richard Madaleno is running for governor. The Montgomery County lawmaker who is the vice chairman of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee in Annapolis will formally kick off his campaign in an 11 a.m. news conference at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville.

While a vocal critic of Governor Larry Hogan on education funding and other budget issues, Madaleno is best known as the sponsor of the Marriage Equality Act, which legalized same sex marriage in Maryland. The measure was passed by lawmakers and then approved by voters in 2012.
