On the morning of Monday, October 9th, residents of South Plainfield joined public officials and other dignitaries outside of the South Plainfield Senior Center to celebrate Columbus Day with a special ceremony put on by the Plainfields’ Chapter of UNICO.
The program was emceed by retired South Plainfield High School Principal Dr. Kenneth May. “I believe events like Columbus Day are very important because [Christopher] Columbus is a part of our past. He did make mistakes, and as members of the 21st century I think it’s our job to remember those who contributed to who we are, but also identify errors that were made so we don’t repeat them,” said Dr. May. “So this is an important event because every person that is here is an ancestor of a dreamer who wanted a better place to be, which America is. And that’s why we are the best, strongest and most energetic country in the world.”
