UVA Installs New Capitals on Rotunda

The University of Virginia is installing new capitals on its historic Rotunda. The column-toppers are part of the $50-million restoration of the centerpiece of Mr. Jefferson's university. Crews plan to lift the first of the 6,800 pound Carrara marble toppers into place Monday. Italian craftsmen created the 16 new capitals based on Thomas Jefferson's original 1821 design.

"The stone carvers were actually able to 3D scan the capital pieces we have, and they used that in combination with photographs to replicate as closely as possible the original capitals," said Sarita Herman, the Rotunda renovation project coordinator. Each capital costs about $150,000.
