WWII vet, 93, handling fame as Tinton Falls mayor elect

Vito Perillo was roused from his sleep at 7:50 a.m. by a phone call from a neighbor congratulating him on winning the mayor's race.  The congratulatory phone calls and knocks on his front door kept coming. A national news network wanted an interview.  Another showed up on his porch. A borough public works employee stopped by to shake his hand. 

"I think it's because of my age, at 93. And the fact that I'm a World War II veteran. But I'd like to get past all that," Perillo said about the sudden attention he's getting after defeating incumbent Mayor Gerald M. Turning in Tuesday's election. Turning, 63, a retired borough police chief and one-time borough administrator, was considered by many to be a lock for a second term, making Tuesday's result in the non-partisan race a big upset.
