To celebrate October as Italian Heritage Month, the Wakefield Sons of Italy hosted a screening of a portion of the PBS documentary series The Italian Americans at the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library in Wakefield. Members and guests enjoyed coffee generously donated by Honey Dew Donuts, and a lovely selection of homemade Italian cookies.
The first part of the series highlighted the challenges faced by the early Italian immigrants, the impact of Italian-American communities and the importance of the Italian-American family in New Orleans, Roseto, Pennsylvania, and New York City. Local Italian-American stories were highlighted as well, such as the leadership of Italian-Americans during the mill strikes in Lawrence, Massachusetts, or the now infamous trial and execution of Sacco and Vanzetti.
