Two paintings that showcase the work of Leonardo da Vinci used to hang side by side in an Italian chapel but they were separated a long time ago, possibly taken as plunder for Napoleon’s conquering armies. The pair will be reunited for the first time in two centuries at Worcester Art Museum for an exhibition called “The Mystery of Worcester’s Leonardo,” which opens March 10 and runs through June 3.

The show will feature a Renaissance panel painting from WAM’s collection, “A Miracle of Saint Donatus,” and “The Annunciation,” on loan from the Musée du Louvre. Both are predella panels, the smaller paintings that were situated at the bottom of a much more impressively sized altarpiece, the “Madonna di Piazza,” from a chapel in Pistoia, Italy. Leonardo da Vinci is believed to have painted important aspects of both, although the WAM panel languished in near obscurity for decades after its authorship was called into question.
