When the Italian Festival returned to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in 2015 after a hiatus stretching several years, it did so with a bang. Thousands were said to have passed through over the three-day gala, which served up food, music and an Italian community that was rallying around its beloved – and now-closed – church.
Last year, organizers extended the festival to four days and added more vendors. Of course, while the larger goal was to raise money to support the church, the Diocese had closed its doors about three months earlier. Since then, there has been no shortage of drama as a group dedicated to saving Mount Carmel from demolition has fought efforts by the Diocese to either tear the building down or sell the property.
