The Tri-County Symphonic Band, under the direction of Philip Sanborn, returns to the acoustically friendly environs of the Dartmouth High School Auditorium on Sunday, Feb. 11, with a program of Italian music titled “All Italia!” From operatic overture to a sonic retelling of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius to the iconic “Pines of Rome,” this concert is certain to bring a bit of the Italian culture to the Southcoast for an afternoon of fun and great band music, according to a press release.
The concert begins with one of Gioachino Rossini’s most popular overtures from the opera “The Italian in Algiers.” This overture is known for its distinct opening of slow, quiet short notes in the bass instruments, leading to a sudden loud burst of sound from the full band with beautiful oboe solos woven between.
