After serving as Watertown’s Fire Chief for more than 13 years, Mario Orangio is planning on retiring. Orangio announced his departure to the Town Council this week, citing health issues. Orangio was first appointed as a firefighter in 1989, moving up to lieutenant in 1997 and then captain in 2000. He was appointed chief in 2004.
“I have some health issues,” Orangio told the Town Council. “It is time to pass the reins.” It’s unclear when exactly Orangio will leave his post since the retirement must be approved by Town Manager Michael Driscoll. Watertown hires using the civil service system. Orangio said he expects to be working another “couple months.” Driscoll said “the timeline of his retirement and replacement has not been determined.”
