At Marotto’s, Italian classics plus something for the heart

There are a lot of Italian restaurants in the Buffalo area where you can get an enjoyable meal. There are even a few whose cooks have convinced me tripe can be made fit for human consumption. But there is only one I know of where the owner, after cooking your dinner, might come out of the kitchen to ask how everything was, then start playing a harmonica. And he takes requests.

When I asked Mark Marotto if he could play "When the Saints Come Marching In," he rolled his eyes like it was child's play, and blew me a soulful version. You can get good pork belly and clams other places, too, but at Marotto's, you can get dinner and a show. There's a clam shack in front of the restaurant, along with a patio, but we chose a table inside. There were several large parties lining tables, including a wedding celebration Marotto serenaded with "Here Comes the Bride."
