Mike Tamburino has sliced and diced his way to a Lincoln Saltdogs-best 36 strikeouts and 1.89 ERA early in the American Association baseball season. The Saltdogs hurler may be a force to be reckoned with on the mound, but back home in Cedarhurst, New York, Tamburino is behind the counter at Tamburino's Italian American Deli, helping run a family business that's one of Long Island's most famous and historic deli shops, serving sandwiches instead of fastballs.
“It's definitely gotten me out of my shell a little bit,” Tamburino said. “Working at a deli, especially in New York where customers want to be served right away, it's gotten me to know what I want to do and how to do it and the order I want to do it. I guess I could put that into pitching terms, setting up batters and what I need to do.”
