At the end of 2017, US foreign direct investment in Italy represented 7.4% of all FDI stocks in Italy, equivalent to a value of US$ 413.2 billion. With a stock of US$ 30.7 billion of US investment in 2017, Italy improved its position in the ranking of countries attracting investment from the US to 23rd place compared to 26th in 2016, with a share that remains, however, always less than 1% total.
Other European countries, such as the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg and Ireland, account for a much larger proportion of these investments. The sector receiving the largest share of US investments in Italy (36.5% of the total) is the manufacturing industry with US$ 11.2 billion, within which the prominent sectors are food and beverages and chemicals and derivatives.
