Italian universities and incubators create an average of 100 spin-offs every year, a litmus test of innovative identity that most people would not link to the dusty world of academia and public research institutes. True: that's not a big number.
According to a survey by Netval, the Italian Network of Technology Transfer Offices of Universities and Public Research Organizations, at the moment there are 1,243 active spin-offs in Italy. The regional leaders are Tuscany(12.6% of the total), Lombardy (9.7%), Piedmont (9.6%) and Emilia-Romagna (8.9%).
