Perhaps one of the most famous and enigmatic portraits in the history of art, the Mona Lisa, also known as La Gioconda, never ceases to surprise scientists and researchers who always find something new about what is widely considered to be the most enigmatic and fascinating work of art we can still admire.
Made by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci between 1503 and 1506, historians agree in saying that the painting is a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of wealthy Florentine silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo, who commissioned the work for their new home and to celebrate the birth of their second son, Andrea.
