It's been an important tradition of my Iron Range Italian in-laws to take the sport of bocce on vacation. Why not? It's a fantastic, laughter-filled game that can be easily adapted to seasons, various climates and interesting terrain. Outside the weight of the bag, including eight large balls and one small jack called a pallino, the game is quite portable.
It's not that they are totally die-hards on this, but they do try to work it in on family get-togethers; as was the case on a recent gathering on the shark-bitten beaches of North Carolina in late June. Past years have seen games played at destinations mainly in Wisconsin and Minnesota. While most play has been during warmer months, recently the sport has been modified for the ice.
