In the US, the national debate on the country’s origins and heritage has involved also the Italian American community. At the heart of discussion, however, there is more than statues and celebratory days, there is the meaning itself of being proud of our roots.

A few weeks ago, the Los Angeles City Council decided to replace Columbus Day celebrations with the “Indigenous People Day,” a festivity dedicated to Native Americans. Los Angeles hasn’t been the first city in the US - and it won’t certainly be the last - to take such a decision, angering a large slice of the Italian American community, who took it as a direct offense to its heritage.
