Remembering… mustard greens, more than just a pretty valley flower

Remembering… mustard greens, more than just a pretty valley flower

by Cookie Curci   For many years, my Italian-American family worked the valley land; they were prune ranchers, cherry growers, farmers and cannery workers. The cuisine they enjoyed was essentially food from the land and some of the food they enjoyed came to them freely from the hills and orchards of the Santa Clara valley. Much of what they grew, they ate...

Enfield’s 90th annual Italian Festival to celebrate heritage, family, friends, food

by Annemarie A. Smith For Carl Sferrazza, the 90th annual Mount Carmel Society's Enfield Italian Festival is a testament to the community's love of God and country, family and friends, and, of course, Italian heritage. "This festival is an opportunity for us to celebrate the values our ancestors brought here," Sferrazza said Tuesday as he motioned to the lights, banners, and tents...

Café Mercato offers inviting Italian-American fare

Café Mercato offers inviting Italian-American fare

by William Porter   Whatever other virtues Café Mercato possesses — and there are several — the newish spot in Denver's Lowry neighborhood has to be the only upscale Italian restaurant anywhere with a close-up view of a B-52 Stratofortress.   That's how close the establishment is to Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, where the Cold War-era bomber is parked outside. So...

Eating Italian in Vermont, New York-Style

by Hannah Palmer Egan   Utter the word "pizza" to New Yorkers living in Vermont, and they'll wax poetic about the thin-crusted, orange-grease-dripping, foldable slices of paradise of their hometown. There, they'll tell you, a typical lunch means two slices and a soda for about $5. Usually they'll lament the lack of comparable fare farther north.   In the first six months of 2015,...
