Announcing The James Walston Scholarship Fund

Dear Friends of The American University of Rome,

As an important part of The American University of Rome's community, we wanted to update you on all that has occurred this last academic year.

Our teaching continues to match our extraordinary global reach atop the Janiculum Hill. Our archeology students have joined Italian University Roma Tre in excavations at the Colosseum. Our Business Department launched a program in Sports & Leisure Management. Our Fine Arts students competed in a Ferrari Club painting competition. We have held a number of masterclasses including a Vocal Institute with world-renowned soprano Marilyn Horne and another with one of the world's most eminent archeologists Lord Colin Renfrew. And we recently launched Master's degrees in Sustainable Cultural Heritage and Religious Studies, along with new Bachelor's degrees in Religious Studies and Fine Arts.

While working hard in promoting our little university, we experienced quite a blow last month when we lost our beloved and long-time Professor of International Relations and Global Politics James Walston. Professor Walston was a founding father of our present university as well as its most distinguished, gracious and charismatic public champion. He was an esteemed professor who provided his students with fascinating classes and real-world experiences, always combined with a habitually gentle wisdom.

We are pleased to announce the launch of a scholarship fund in memory of our dear Professor James Walston at the request of two AUR International Relations alumnae, Caitlin Bagby (2009) and Sallie Pisch (2010).

The James Walston Scholarship Fund will be dedicated to supporting the field trips to international organizations and areas of conflict, separatism, nationalism or development Professor Walston valued so much. These trips have become a fundamental part of AUR's International Relations & Global Politics education providing students not only the opportunity to experience first-hand their field of study but also to build a community of students that share a common passion in international affairs. It will enable us to open these trips to future IRGP students who would otherwise be unable to afford them. This crucial part of their IRGP education can hopefully become an integral component of the major.

Please help support The James Walston Scholarship Fund by donating, spreading the word and directing those interested to the donation page on our website: http://www.aur.edu/give/james-walston-scholarship-fund/.

I would be delighted to tell you more about Professor James Walston and The James Walston Scholarship Fund. My email is [email protected].

Thank you again for supporting The American University of Rome.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Hodges
