Café Mercato offers inviting Italian-American fare

Whatever other virtues Café Mercato possesses — and there are several — the newish spot in Denver's Lowry neighborhood has to be the only upscale Italian restaurant anywhere with a close-up view of a B-52 Stratofortress.

That's how close the establishment is to Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, where the Cold War-era bomber is parked outside. So you can be excused if, when you're tucking into your plate of fried calamari or ravioli, you can't help but hear the late, great Slim Pickens, who played the B-52 commander in "Dr. Strangelove," talking over his cockpit intercom about going "toe to toe with the Rooskies."
