Carla Leonardi, owner of Seattle's iconic Cafe Lago, is getting into the grocery business. When she heard that the short-lived Canal Street Market in her own Portage Bay neighborhood was closing, she decided to jump on the opportunity to expand her reach and fill a need in the community.
Leonardi grew up in a grocery store and had ideas about just what kind of a market her neighborhood needed, but she didn't stop there. With a lease in place, she taped a white sheet of butcher paper to the outside of the shop's door, asking neighbors what they would like to see from a grocery store. Nearly a dozen pages were filled, with people asking for everything from fresh produce to pizza — suggestions she took into account before opening Little Lago Italian Grocery on November 7. Here's what you can expect.
