From shore to shore: Preserving Italian heritage

As generations age and memories fade, the experiences of our forefathers can also recede. The Sons of Italy, however, is doing its part to promote the legacy of this area's Italian ancestors. In a collaborative effort earlier this year, the Vincent Lombardi Lodge 2270 of Rochester, the Geneva Lodge 2397 (men) and the Geneva American Italian Ladies Lodge 2397A sponsored an essay contest, created by the Commission of Social Justice of the Order Sons of Italy in America.


According to Sandy Schading of the Geneva lodge, the contest's goal is to keep alive the culture of Italian families by interviewing a senior citizen of Italian descent. The contest was open to middle school students in grades 6 to 8 and their essays were judged according to the New York State Expository Writing Evaluation Rubric.
