The Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia invites interested students to apply to our M.A. and Ph.D. degree programs in Romance Languages with a specialization in Italian and Italian Studies. We especially welcome students interested in combining work in Italian with work in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or Classics. Students at the M.A. level combine their work in Italian with courses in a second Romance Language.

Our Italian faculty's areas of specialization include Medieval, Early Modern and Modern Italian literature, language and culture, Italian Cinema and Cultural Studies. Our students also work with faculty in related departments, programs, and institutes at UGA, including Classics, Linguistics, Theatre and Film Studies, and Women's Studies.

We offer teaching assistantships that cover tuition and pay a stipend for two years of study at the M.A. level and five years for the Ph.D. Additional support is available in the form of departmental research and travel awards and summer teaching. Our graduate students receive rigorous and comprehensive pedagogical training and leave the program with experience teaching in the traditional, online, and hybrid formats in both language and content classes.

Several of our M.A. graduates have chosen to continue in our Ph.D. program; and others have gone on to doctoral programs elsewhere, including Yale University. An M.A. graduate is currently a Senior Lecturer and Director of the UGA Classics Study Abroad in Rome program.

Upon completion of the Ph.D., all our graduates have found employment as full-time university or high school teachers. Several have accepted tenure-track positions at Kansas State University, Brenau University, and the University of North Georgia, as well as a Senior Lecturer position at the University of Georgia. Another Ph.D. graduate taught and chaired a department at Norcross High School. We also support preparation for alternative academic careers and job searches outside of academia.
