Italian Grandmother, Multistate Wholesaler, Happy To Grow Slowly And Make Gelato By Hand

A city famous for its pizza is making a name for itself with another Italian delicacy. At Gelato Giuliana, 15 employees produce between 1,500 and 2,000 pounds of gelato a day. The company sells to supermarkets, country clubs, restaurants and colleges from Maine to Delaware.

"This was quite accidental actually, this manufacturing business," said founder and chief executive Giuliana Maravalle. "It was never intended." After retiring in her early 50s from her hair dressing school, the Branford resident decided she wasn't quite ready to settle down. She opened Caffe Bottega, an authentic Italian cafe, in downtown New Haven in 2002.
