Mike D’Antoni can add another NBA Coach of the Year award to his trophy case. D’Antoni, a former Marshall men’s basketball player and Mullens native who is in his first year as head coach of the Houston Rockets, beat out San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra for the award, voted on by a panel of 100 independent media members and handed out Monday night.
D’Antoni, younger brother of Marshall men’s basketball coach Dan D’Antoni, previously won the award in 2005 with the Phoenix Suns. Bringing his “7 seconds or less” offense to Houston, D’Antoni led the Rockets to a 55-27 record in the regular season, the third-best record in the league and the Western Division’s No. 3 seed. The Rockets reached the Western Division semifinals, losing to the San Antonio Spurs.
