The Salem Italian American Club will celebrate its 100th anniversary on July 28. All members are invited to attend throughout the day and enjoy the bocce, the music, food, games and fun. The club, which was chartered July 22, 1918, was originally named Risveglio D’Italia. Charter members were Michael Barbieri, Joseph Bova, Bernard DeMeo, Joseph Quinn and Louis Julian. During the early years, the club was active in community events and had a marching band and orchestra.
The charter, even during the depression years, even when the membership dwindled to a few, has always remained active. On June 16, 1959, President Frank Zamarelli, Secretary Dominic Parlontieri and Trustee Tullio Ciotti of the Risveglio D’Italia filed with the secretary of the state of Ohio that the name be changed to the Italian American Club of Salem Ohio.
