The government has just drawn up its 2017-2023 strategic plan for the tourism industry, one of most undervalued sectors in the nation. Revenue totaled €35.8 billion in 2015, putting Italy in seventh place in value and fifth (after France, the USA, Spain and China) in number of visitors (50.7 million). That's too few given the untapped potential of a country that holds a record for the number of Unesco sites.
The new plan is focused on more efficiently exploiting Italy's long wave of tourism and enhancing it across the entire national territory and all year around. Tourism in Italy, the only segment that is never in crisis, will grow an estimated 3.5%-4.5% this year.
