Trieste’s best-kept secret is its super-niche olive oil

Tucked away in the corner of northern Italy, Trieste is usually a place more associated with coffee bars and literary cafes than it is with olive oil. However olive cultivation has ancient roots in the area of Trieste, even though it has never been easy because of its northern location.

It was the Phoenicians that first planted olive trees on the hills surrounding the gulf in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea; then the Romans started producing olive oil on this calcareous ground close to the coast, between its cliffs and underground rivers.
