Joe Jordano, who is entering his 21st season at Pitt's baseball coach, is scheduled to reach a milestone when he coaches his 1,500th game, including time spent as coach at Merychurst, April 29 at Cost Field against LIU Brooklyn. Barring postponements, of course. Senior outfielder Frank Maldonado, who was the team's second-leading hitter last season (.281 batting average), said he was attracted to Pitt by a connection with Jordano, the longest-tenured coach at the school.
“I don't know if it was an Italian thing,” he said. “He had a great personality. It reminded me a lot of the way I was brought up. I was raised with some tough love. It's like that in an Italian family. “He's like a father figure away from home. I feel comfortable going to him with issues I might have outside of baseball. Whether it be something as simple as girl problems or problems with school. He always seems to have the right piece of advice.”In 30 years, Jordano has compiled an 842-614-2 overall record, including 559-496-2 at Pitt.
