Si fatica a immaginarlo nelle sembianze del cowboy, questo friulano diciottenne alto, magro, studente del quarto anno di un istituto professionale con specializzazione in microbiologia e tecniche del controllo ambientale. L’aria rude del mandriano davvero non ce l’ha. Gli occhi azzurri sono allegri e se chiacchiera poco è solo per timidezza. Eppure Davide De Monte, proveniente da Fagagna, borgo di sei mila abitanti in provincia di Udine, l’altro giorno si è aggiudicato quello che possiamo definire il campionato del mondo per cowboy «under 18».
Una vittoria esaltante e incredibile ottenuta «fuori casa», agguantata a Forth Worth, in Texas. Posto leggendario, per i patiti delle storie western: assieme ad Abilene, che sta poco più a Ovest, la città era la più nota delle «cow town», ovvero i luoghi di arrivo, vendita e smistamento delle mandrie bovine.
