Ciao from Rome. The editorial of this September 2017 issue starts from what has been going on in the last weeks, with an awful recrudescence of the attacks against Columbus. The picture here is a collage of the 16 Columbus monuments vandalized through the last years in these American cities: Buffalo NY (twice), New York City NY (Manhattan and Queens), Syracuse NY, Binghamton NY, Yonkers NY, Baltimore MD, Dearborn MI, Detroit MI, Hamilton TX, Houston TX, Hazleton PA, Richmond VA, Boston MA and Washington DC. A few of these hate crimes happened just in these last weeks. Also, several cities have seen Columbus Day replaced (Los Angeles is the most important) or are trying to achieve this goal by petitions and proposals; and there are also petitions and proposals to bring down other Columbus statues, like in Minneapolis, San Jose and other cities.

We are working here in Italy to bring together people and ask them to do an appeal to the Italian institutions to defend Columbus. I did three live radio shows and an interview on the national newspaper Il Tempo, trying to wake up the Italian people from the August hibernation. There's more to do, and we will: we are working on different angles we won't anticipate you here. Let's just say that the Columbus Day in Italy is not a dream anymore but a project very close to become a reality in 2018. And expect a surprise for our second interview of October, that will be published on our website the very Columbus Day, October 9 (and then you will find it on the October issue of our magazine).

We’re ending this September editorial with a tiny suggestion: take a look at this Google project called "The Grand Tour of Italy". You will enjoy it very much, for sure.

Please remember that our new book is out. At the beginning of every year we will publish a yearbook about the year before, and so this is the We the Italians 2016 yearbook: with all the interviews done, both in English and Italian. It is a useful tool to know more about Italy and the US and also to learn or refresh the knowledge of our wonderful Italian language. It can be bought and/or donated here.

That’s all for now. So stay tuned, fasten your seat belt and enjoy the ride. The future’s so bright, we gotta wear shades!
