Flowers showered the statue of the Madonna Della Strada as she was gently lowered on a table so marchers in the Italian-American Festival’s Sunday morning procession could crowd around to pin money to her and pray. After a Catholic Mass officiated in Italian, members of the Southington Sons of Italy Club lifted the statue and joined a procession from the club’s Center Street home in a loop around Liberty Street, Eden Avenue and Bristol Street.
The Mass and procession are a tradition carried over from Italy, said Antonietta Barbato, one of the co-chairs of the event’s organizing committee. “We are very proud that we are able to celebrate...to relive our culture and traditions,” said Barbato, who is also president of the Southington Italian Rosary Society. The money collected during the Mass and procession is given to local charities.
