Worcester's Christopher Columbus statue stays, as City Council votes against removal

The Christopher Columbus statue, which has become a lightning rod during the past month, will remain in front of Union Station, at least for the foreseeable future. The City Council voted 8-2 Tuesday night to "file" an order filed by District 4 Councilor Sarai Rivera that called on City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. to work with the local Italian American community to remove the Columbus statue and replace it with an appropriate statue or memorial to honor the many contributions of Worcester’s Italian community.

The council's vote to file effectively put the order in the parliamentary wastebasket, ending debate and further action on it.
