Ancient Roman sarcophagus worth $4 million stolen more than 30 years ago to be returned to Italy

Brooklyn prosecutors have filed court papers to seize an ancient Roman sarcophagus that had been illegally excavated in Italy more than 30 years ago.


The marble sculpture, depicting a sleeping woman, turned up last May at an exhibition at the Park Ave. Armory in Manhattan where a Switzerland-based antiquities dealer had valued the sarcophagus lid at $4 million, according to papers filed in Brooklyn Federal Court.
