Veterans from Hawthorne American Legion Post 112 and members of the Westchester Medal of Honor Committee paid tribute to New Yorkers who have received the nation's highest military award in ceremonies Wednesday at Kensico Cemetery.
"Not many people know about National Medal of Honor Day, and it's not really commemorated in very many places," said Pete Fiumefreddo, post commander. "Most of those who were awarded the Medal of Honor gave their lives for this country." Several years ago Fiumefreddo and other post members established the state's first Medal of Honor monument, listing all New York recipients of the award, at Mount Pleasant Town Hall.
