Several students were honored as Columbus Day Essay Contest winners after the Clark UNICO Italian-American Feast held in October. Winners included Makayla Pope a fifth grader at Frank K. Hehnly School, Collen Sullivan a fifth grader at Valley Road School, Alesandra McFadden a seventh grader at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School, and Christopher Warnick a senior at Arthur L. Johnson High School.
Pope wrote about Alessandro Volta, Sullivan wrote about Mother Cabrini, McFadden wrote about Giada De Laurentiis, and Warnick wrote about Rita Levi-Montalcini. Students shared their essays and were presented with certificates as well as Barnes and Noble gift cards. The contest, sponsored by UNICO, asked students to write an essay about Christopher Columbus or any other prominent Italian or Italian-American.
