I wasn't expecting anything special, but you never know what you're going to find at a shopping plaza pizzeria that boasts a New York state of mind. DiMaggio's in Winter Haven is the sort of place that invites instant allegiance. It is, as the location implies, an unassuming spot situated at the eastern end of Cypress Gardens Boulevard.

Frankly, I wouldn't know authentic New York pizza if it slapped me, although I did once grab a pie at a Big Apple pizzeria owned by the celebrity chef Mario Batali. It was a wonderful thing, all perfectly blistered and sporting a thin, very thin, topping of various cheeses and just a sheen of tomato sauce.
