Genoa hosts the anthology of the Italian photographer known abroad as the Poet of Photography. The exhibit Gianni Berengo Gardin – Stories of a Photographer runs in the Palazzo Ducale (February 14 –June 8) with approximately 200 photos that retrace the career of this Italian grand master, from the 1950s to today. The exhibit also features an entire chapter dedicated to Genoa itself, with photos ranging from 1969 to 2002, largely unpublished works selected just for Stories of a Photographer.
Gianni Berengo Gardin was expert in renewing the visual language used to imoortalize the Bel Paese – portraying not only the usual (Italian and international) places like Venice and Milan, New York, Vienna, and Great Britain, but also of mental institutions (treating the Basaglia Law for psychiatric treatment reform), Liguria, the subjects of his exhilarating work with Renzo Piano, inside homes (part his significant photojournalism work), Venice and its Art Biennale, and his experience with Touring Club Italia.
