On March 29, 1986, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was born in New York, NY, to Cindy and Joseph. She started playing the piano when she was four years old and started writing her own music by the time she was 13. A year later, Stefani began performing at open mic nights throughout the city. After high school, she enrolled at Collaborative Arts Project 21, a conservatory at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. However, she withdrew from the program when she was 19 to focus full-time on her music career.

After a number of attempts to jumpstart her career as the lead singer of various bands, Stefani decided to try performing as a solo artist. She found inspiration from Queen's song "Radio Ga Ga" and transformed into her new persona: Lady Gaga. In 2008, she moved from New York to Los Angeles, CA, where she signed with Interscope Records. Lady Gaga released her first album, The Fame, in August of the same year. Her debut garnered her five Grammy Award nominations. She followed the success of her first album with The Fame Monster (2009), Born this Way (2011) and Artpop (2013).
