Historian Rafael Ortiz begins his book, “Christopher Columbus The Hero” with: “If you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it; and sadly the lies about Columbus and the anti-Columbus Day movement are growing and becoming mainstream.”
It was on Oct. 12, according to the old Julian calendar, that Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas and introduced the New World to the Old World. Today, some want to replace the Columbus day holiday with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. However, an Indigenous Peoples’ Day already exists. The effort to displace Columbus by historical revisionists through myths and outright lies proves how little they know about the Great Admiral. For starters, despite revisionist claims that he was illiterate, Columbus kept a diary.
