A 21-year-old nurse from New York has described how she was insulted simply because of her Italian surname in an emotional post on her Instagram page. Instagram user @praylittlejay posted this on social media yesterday:
It's currently 10:56 and instead of studying, I'm laying in bed thinking about the state this world is in right now.
On Monday, I was assigned a resident who, after telling him my full name, questioned if I was Italian. I said yes, as I am. To which he relied that he wasn't letting "some dago" take care of him because he "ain't ever met an Italian worth a lick." I, in my best professional manner, apologized that he felt that way and told him I'd get him another nurse for the night. And then I left his room; and sobbed. It's 2015. Two thousand and fifteen. And I still got judged because my last name alludes to my Italian heritage.
