Patti LuPone: Italian of the Week

Patti Ann LuPone was born on April 21, 1949, in Northport, New York. Her family came to the United States from L'Aquila and Sicily. As a child, she knew she wanted to act. She was in the first graduating class at the Julliard's Drama School in 1972. Patti was also one of the founding members of John Houseman's The Company, and toured with the organization for four years.

Patti made her Broadway debut in 1973 in the play The Three Sisters. Two years later, she received her first Tony Award nomination for her work in The Robber Bridegroom. During her career, she often teamed up with David Mamet and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Her most famous roles were in Evita (1979), Anything Goes (1988), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber (2006), and Gypsy (2008). Outside of theater, Patti has starred in television – including Life Goes On, Frasier, and American Horror Story – as well as film.
