One of the recent referendums involving Italians concerned citizenship. Since the required quorum was not met, nothing has changed: the proposal to reduce the requirement for acquiring Italian citizenship from 10 to 5 years of uninterrupted legal residence in Italy for non-EU nationals currently living in the country has failed.
But who are these people? Where do they come from, what are their living conditions, how old are they, how long have they been in Italy, and what concrete challenges do they face in a process that is longer and more complex than in many other European countries?
