During his years as an undercover narcotics detective with the Erie County Sheriff's Office, Charles A. Mecca also worked in security at sporting events, concerts and at the old Record Theater. During the busy pre-Christmas period in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mr. Mecca wore a Santa costume while guarding the record store on Main Street at Lafayette Avenue.
"He would just do it to bring joy to the neighborhood kids," said his granddaughter Brittani Tomasello. "He would do anything for anybody." Charles A. Mecca, described by his family as "a humble, selfless and kind man who was loved and adored by so many," died on June 15, 2020, in Erie County Medical Center, where he had been a patient for nine days. He was 75.
