One legend has it that Naples’ cult of coffee came about thanks to Maria Carolina of Hapsburg, daughter of Maria Theresa of Austria and wife of King Ferdinand IV. When the queen moved under the shadow of Vesuvius, refined coffee houses in Vienna were already institutions.

In this way, they began to appear in the capital of the Bourbon Kingdom. Among the historic cafés of Naples, the only survivor to this day is Gran Caffè Gambrinus, at the corner of Piazza Trieste e Trento and Piazza del Plebiscito.
