How to order a coffee in Italian sign language

People with hearing impairments will soon be able to order a coffee more easily in bars in Trieste, thanks to a special menu in sign language. The menu is styled as a 'visual dictionary' that can be used as a clear and unambiguous tool for deaf people and bar staff to communicate with each other.

This is the aim of the project "Listen with your eyes, see with your hands", organised by Italy's national deaf association and Trieste's local authority in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. About 500 bars in the province will take part in the initiative, in which the menus will be distributed with Italian sign language translations for 14 of the most popular drinks, from draft beer to a glass of wine.
