Recruitment of Italian civilians at American bases in Italy has been suspended, trade unions said on Monday. "We have learned from the national secretariat that there has been a freeze on hiring Italian civilians at the American bases in Italy,' said Roberta Del Savio, the coordinator of Fisascat Cisl union at the Aviano air base in the north-eastern region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Last week US President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by Elon Musk reportedly shut down the credit cards of American and Italian civilian employees who work in the offices of the Aviano base and of the Ederle and Del Din army bases near Vicenza. The bank accounts used for administrative expenses including basic supplies have also been provisionally shut down, well-informed sources said.
