Italian cyclist and journalist stops in Calhoun County for tour of Alabama

In 1991 a 31-year-old Carlo Ferarri left Italy to backpack in the United States. At 32, he decided to complete his travels by bicycle. Now 55 years old, he has brought his wanderlust to Calhoun County. "When I first came to America to backpack I noticed a lot of travelers were on bicycles," Ferarri said Wednesday through his Italian accent.

"When I was young, I couldn't stand to be on a bike, but now I feel pleasure traveling on a bike." Ferarri began writing about his travels for a cycling magazine in Italy in the late 1990s. "It started as a way for me to earn my trips," he said.
