Italian heritage celebrated during Columbus Day Parade

At least it didn't rain. About 200 people gathered along Main Street in downtown Mount Clemens on Saturday for the Columbus Day Parade. Despite sunny skies, temperatures were in the upper 40-degree range, quite a contrast from a stretch of mild weather for days leading up to the procession.

"We got rained out last year," said Mark Garagiola, parade chairman. "We were literally ready to go when we had a storm move in and I saw lighting. We had to cancel." The annual parade marked a celebration of the culture, history and heritage of Italy for Italian Americans. A variety of social clubs, businesses, pageant queens, marching bands, floats and youth groups participated in the event.
