New Haven’s Columbus statue replacement hits roadblock

The replacement for the Columbus statue in Wooster Square Park has hit a roadblock, with objections to its size and design as well as questions on compliance with historic district standards. A vote on the proposed four-figure family statue meant to honor Italian-American immigrants to Wooster Square has been put off until Jan. 12 as the project seeks a certificate of appropriateness.

Trina Learned, chairwoman of the Historic District Commission, at its December meeting said making a decision at this point was “preemptive and would actually shut down the process.” She said the study, undertaken by the Wooster Square Monument Committee over the past 19 months, “still has a little bit more momentum in it.”
